Common HR interview questions for freshers (with sample answers)

Most freshers prepare for the technical round and walk into the HR round cold. But the HR round is where offers are won and lost. The questions are predictable, so there is no excuse for freezing. Here's how to handle the ones that come up almost every time.
How the HR round actually works
HR is checking three things: can you communicate clearly, will you fit the team, and are you likely to stay. They are not trying to trick you. Calm, structured answers beat clever ones.
"Tell me about yourself"
This is your opening, not your life story. Use present, past, future: who you are now, one relevant thing you've done, and what you want next.
Sample: 'I'm a final-year B.Com student from Lucknow. Last year I interned in sales at a local distributor where I learned how to handle real customers. I'm now looking for a sales role where I can grow into team management.'
"Why should we hire you?"
Pick one real strength and back it with a proof point. Don't list adjectives.
Sample: 'I pick things up fast. In my internship I was handling the CRM on my own within a week, and I'd bring that same speed here.'
"What is your biggest weakness?"
Name a real, fixable weakness and show what you're doing about it. Never say 'I'm a perfectionist'.
Sample: 'I used to avoid public speaking. I joined my college's placement prep group and now I present every week, it's getting easier.'
Behavioural questions: use STAR
For 'tell me about a time you...' questions, answer in four parts: Situation, Task, Action, Result. Keep it to 30–60 seconds and always end with the outcome.
The result is the part most freshers forget, and it's the part that lands.
Always have questions for them
When they ask 'do you have any questions?', say yes. Ask about the role, the team, or what success looks like in the first six months. It signals genuine interest.
